That’s "Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!" if you don’t happen to speak Gaelic. We all celebrated in proper Firstgiving style…. by volunteering at Ras na hEireann. A bunch of us rose and shone bright and early on Sunday morning, post-St. Paddy’s festivities, to head out to the Somerville Senior Center just a few blocks from our own headquarters in Davis Square. We spent the better part of the morning directing highly motivated 5k runners to their bib numbers and safety pins, then braved the cold for a few minutes to see what 3000 people running up Holland Street looks like. (Check out our pictures if you’re curious!)
After the excitement was all over — and the fun down the pubs was just starting! — Beth and I helped Emma and her fellow race-organizers (and oodles of volunteers) sort those little tags the runners put on their shoes to record their start and end times. Every single one had to go back in the right numbered box; all 2000 of them.
All in all we had a blast. Nothing says "Happy St. Patrick’s Day" like a few thousand green-clad athletes running past on a cold March morning. To all who ran: we applaud your motivation. And hope you had fun at the party afterward!
