2008 Social Capitalist Awards

Last week we posted a discussion surrounding the debate over how to “do good well” when it comes to international development.  We made some suggestions about how to advocate for a cause and maintain your integrity by identifying and supporting an NPO that is doing good work responsibly and efficiently.  While we know it’s not the easiest thing in the world, with a little research, it can be done.

Here’s another resource to help you identify who is worth investing in, both with your dollars and your fundraising efforts: a list of organizations that are changing the world!

Not too long ago, Fast Company announced the winners of its 2008 Social Capitalist Awards.  What better way to inspire excellence than a little competition? 45 NPOs have been granted this year’s prestigious award for demonstrating excellence in social impact, entrepreneurship, innovation, sustainability, and aspiration.  See the index of winners on Fast Company’s website for links to profiles for each NPO.

At the Riches for Good blog, Ryan Gunderson highlights 16 of this list who specifically address international concerns and identifies those which have also received Charity Navigator’s 4-star rating for financial efficiency and strength.

These are great resources for fundraisers looking to support international development causes like education, public health, economic development, clean water, and access to capital.  Know of other NPOs deserving of a social capitalist award?  Post comments below.
