Beth Kanter, champion of the social media revolution and an authority on the use of social media for NPO fundraising, recently posted prophetically
on her blog a response to the following question:
“When will online fundraising using social media and social networks become more than just a niche source of income?”
Here’s an excerpt from her response:
“I believe social media will become as ubiquitous to development offices as is the phone, direct mail, and email. In the next decades, we’ll see rapid adoption of social media for many nonprofit purposes, including fundraising and as gen y’s come into their own as donors.” You can read the rest of her post and respond with comments here.
We think this is (a) a useful question to ask and (b) an important discussion to engage in. Firstgiving.com fundraisers are these fundraisers of the future. Our fundraisers are raising thousands of dollars for charities and NPOs by harnessing the power of social media for good work. They are creating personal fundraising pages and then Facebooking, Tweeting, Digging, Stumbling, Flickring, YouTubing–the list goes on– FTW (for the win). In fact, as of today:
1,252,705 people
have helped raise $69,304,142
for 13,708 nonprofits
using Firstgiving.com.
We have some seriously successful Firstgiving.com fundraisers. These individuals are part of the aforementioned trend by which social media fundraising is moving from a niche to a significant source of income for NPOs.
