January Awareness Month

Welcome to 2009!  Last year we helped 3,500 NPOs raise money online–more than $30 million from more than half a million donors.  And we, like you, have big plans for the new year’s online fundraising.  One of them is to create our own awareness month campaign:

Ok, but seriously.   Below are the national causes of the month, with links to NPOs working in these areas.  Officially, January is:

Cervical Cancer & Cervical Health Awareness Month

The National Cervical Cancer Coalition works to enhance cervical health for all women, especially uninsured and underserved women by promoting cervical disease prevention

Stalking Awareness Month

Underground Railroad provides emergency shelter, advocacy, counseling, transitional housing and legal support to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking and their families.

National Glaucoma Awareness Month

The Glaucoma Foundation works to eradicate this disease, the leading cause of preventable blindness.

Thyroid Awareness Month

The Thyroid Foundation of America seeks to ensure timely, accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and ongoing support for all individuals with thyroid disease.

National Blood Donor Month

Local chapter American Red Cross saves lives with regular blood donation events and other disaster relief.

Poverty in America Awareness Month

Organized by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development via United Way, they’ve got a pretty cool awareness campaign going here.

Birth Defect Prevention & Awareness Month

One of many NPOs working to prevent and address different types of of birth defects, Smile Train helps provide free cleft surgery and related treatment for children who would otherwise never receive it.

And you might also be interested to know:

Jan 5-11 is Folic Acid Awareness Week, sponsored by the National Folic Acid Council and the March of Dimes.

Jan 18-24 is Healthy Weight Week.

And if you would like to take up weather as a cause, you could be the first person to create a fundraising page for the Weather Research Center.  Just sayin’.
