This week's fundraising Best Practice: March 5–Reach your event goals with virtual participation

Our friends at Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Association (RSDSA) are masters of community building around fundraising events. They’re running their annual walk in June, and they didn’t want a conflict with the event date to stop their supporters from being part of it.

For people who are unable to make the event, the folks at RSDSA created a “virtual walker” registration type:

When a supporter goes to FirstGiving to register for the walk, he or she can choose to participate as a walker or a virtual walker and then start raising money, regardless of his or her availability on event day.

Virtual supporters are very important to RSDSA’s success. Last year, RSDSA had their largest team ever with 225 walkers and 60 virtual walkers! Needless to say, this strategy gives supporters a great opportunity to stay involved with a cause that is important to them.

So, to recap: Don’t miss out on opportunities to grow your community of supporters. Offer a virtual registration option for your fundraising event.
