Boston Marathon spotlight: Kelly Strauch for Boston Partners in Education
When Kelly Strauch was moving from small-town Laurel, Montana to the big city of Boston, Massachusetts, she dreamed of running the Boston Marathon. Only knowing a little about running and marathons, she learned from a friend that the Boston Marathon consisted of 26.2 miles that started in Hopkinton and traveled into the city. She was surprised to find out just how far 26.2 miles was and to find out that her new employer, Boston Partners in Education, had a marathon team participating in the 114th Boston Marathon.
We got further insight into Kelly’s training and her first experience with the Boston Marathon:
Why are you raising money for Boston Partners in Education?
I’m raising money for Boston Partners because I strongly believe in their mission, enough to move across the country and volunteer in a year-long position on a government stipend, in fact!
What is your best training tip?
Find a friend to train with. I run with my awesome teammate Erin to work three mornings a week, and there’s no way I could drag my butt out of bed at 6:30am if I didn’t know she was waiting for me at our starting line.
What is your best fundraising tip?
Ask everyone you’ve ever met, whether it’s asking directly through letters and phone calls or asking indirectly through Twitter and Facebook. I’m amazed that some folks I haven’t seen in years or hardly know at all have stepped up and supported this cause I believe in; it has been a moving experience.
What kind of impact do you think this experience will have on your life after the marathon?
I will forever try to work into unrelated conversations that I once ran the Boston Marathon, though the medal (that will obviously adorn my neck forever) might give it away.
What is the best thing about being on Team Boston Partners?
Because several other current and former Boston Partners staff members are on our team, being on Team Boston Partners in Education has been the best way to get to know the folks at my new job, hands down. It has also proven an effective way to get to see all different parts of the city by foot!
What’s on your iPod?
My MP3 player currently holds a playlist of songs that have tempos of 90 beats per minute. I’m told that experts recommend running in such a way so that your feet hit the ground 180 times in 60 seconds, so my 90 BPM songs keep me running efficiently on the few days that I train by myself. Of course, there’s also some music that has nothing to do with the marathon! I believe it currently holds Wilco, Coldplay, The Mountain Goats, Boxcar Racer, and Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros.
Way to go Kelly! We welcome you to Boston, and will be on the lookout for you on April 19.

There are actually a number of details like that to take into consideration. That is a nice level to deliver up. I offer the ideas above as basic inspiration but clearly there are questions just like the one you convey up the place crucial thing will likely be working in trustworthy good faith. I don?t know if finest practices have emerged around things like that, however I am positive that your job is clearly identified as a fair game. Both boys and girls really feel the impact of just a second’s pleasure, for the rest of their lives.
