How much is too much? Giving amounts and your nonprofit

Get the most meaningful contribution from your donors. What’s the best “suggested gift” and why?

What are the donor trends?

Studies show that between 2007 and 2010 donations to nonprofit charities rose by 130% with online donations alone rising an astounding 175%. These numbers reflect that, despite the economic downturn, donors are willing and ready to support the causes they believe in. The majority of online donations are given in increments of 25, 50, and 100, and about 94% of all these donations were under the 100 mark. The donations over 100 were, in order of popularity, 250, 150 and 500.

Timing is everything

While it is important to communicate to your donors that every gift makes a significant impact on your cause, you will be more successful in your fundraising if you know what to ask for and when. Studies find that online direct donors give, on average, twice the donation amount than event donors. Weekend donors, while less common, also tend to give $5 more than weekday donors.

What this means for your nonprofit

Be proud of your mission and don’t be afraid to suggest large amounts for your donors. While many of them will donate a smaller amount, this initial suggestion will reinforce that your cause is worthy of that amount. Also if they are unable to give your suggested amount this year, studies find that repeat donors tend to give more than unique donors. People are genuinely generous for causes they believe in, make sure you give them a reason to donate, and clearly outline your mission and goals of the charity.

“Thank You” goes a long way

While all these statistics are important to keep in mind while strategically planning your fundraiser it is essential to let donors know the value of their generosity. Sending out thank you cards, and more importantly updates on research and developments made possible by their donations encourage them to repeatedly give and at higher rates.
