Join us for Digital Storytelling Day on Facebook January 19

Great digital storytelling brings the viewer inside the cause and emphasizes the personal importance of the cause to the donor. What’s more, it motivate donors to give, and give even more than they would otherwise.

Last Tuesday, our friends at TechSoup launched their Digital Storytelling Event with an hour-long twitter chat about fundraising and digital storytelling, and we were their guest. The twitter chat was such a success that we are bringing the idea to our own Facebook Page as a day-long Facebook Wall event, and TechSoup will be our guest.

Throughout the day on Wednesday, January 19, we’ll facilitate an online Facebook conversation about how to use digital storytelling for fundraising. We invite you to contribute your thoughts and expertise. We’ll also post resources for you to create your own digital fundraising stories. We will post some of these questions to facilitate discussion:

  • What makes a great fundraising video story?
  • What technology do you use to create your own video?
  • Offer examples of great personal fundraising videos and why they motivate us to donate
  • How and when do you ask for the donation?
  • What effect does a video or a digital photo stories have on fundraising?

Throughout the day, staff from TechSoup will also contribute insights and strategies for creating great digital stories. Join us to learn best practices and answer each other’s burning questions about how to create a great video or picture story that motivates donors to give.

Our Digital Storytelling Day is open to everyone through our FirstGiving Facebook page. We’ll post messages and resources about digital storytelling and fundraising afterward from the Facebook Event we’ve created, so please RSVP.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about the technology behind creating a video or taking a great photo, how to select what story to tell, how to tell your story through video, and find resources to help you be a better fundraiser and storyteller.

To begin the dialogue, here are two videos that show both sides of fundraising. The first is from Special Olympics Alaska to promote their Freezin for a Reason Polar Plunge. The second is from Chris Ronan, a fundraiser raising money for the Special Olympics Kansas Polar Plunge and Strut.

What story do they tell? Do they motivate you to donate?
