Nonprofit spotlight: Pancreatic Cancer Action Network
Each month we highlight a couple of our nonprofit partners who have unique fundraising events, great success stories, or something else fantastic going on that we’d like to tell you about. Next up in our nonprofit fundraising series, the nonprofit spotlight is, The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, and their Keep the Memory Alive campaign.
The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is the only national organization creating hope in a comprehensive way for anyone facing pancreatic cancer. The organization does this through research, patient support, community outreach and advocacy for a cure. They raise money for direct private funding of research—and advocate for more aggressive federal research funding of medical breakthroughs in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer.
The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network fills the void of information and options by giving patients and caregivers the reliable, personalized information they need to make informed decisions. The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network create a sense of hope and community so no one has to face pancreatic cancer alone. Over the past ten years, they have helped support individuals and communities across the country work together to raise awareness and funds to find a cure for pancreatic cancer.
Pancreatic cancer is the 4th leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, but still less than 2% of the National Cancer Institute federal research is dedicated to pancreatic cancer. In 2009, over 42,000 will be diagnosed and over 35,000 will lose their battle in the United States alone. Since the start of the Research Grants Program at Pancreatic Cancer Action Network they have supplied over $5 million for research.
Keep The Memory Alive is a campaign that invites people to create fundraising pages in memorial to those patients that lost their cancer battle. Again Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is all about the research and doing anything and everything they can to find a cure. They invite family members to celebrate a loved one’s life by asking for donations to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. It is something we don’t see very often at FirstGiving; a campaign only dedicated to memorial pages and we think it is a wonderful idea to celebrate a life and raise money for the cause at the same time. The Keep the Memory Alive Campaign has raised over $220,000 through FirstGiving and is still going strong.
Fantastic job Pancreatic Cancer Action Network we wish you continued success in your endeavor!
