The candidates and their charitable giving track record


Ever wonder about Obama and Romney’s involvement with nonprofits? Here’s a look at their past philanthropic involvement.

Barack Obama

Barack Obama is known for his concerns for the middle and lower class here’s how he’s actively expressed his concerns in the past:

-Developing Communities Project

DCP works with inner city Chicago communities to foster safer neighborhoods, jobs opportunities, achieving educational systems, and supportive services for affordable housing and accessible transportation. Obama while serving as an Illinois House Representative Obama acted as the director of the foundation.

-Project Vote

Project vote works to ensure that everyone has an equal chance to express his or her political preference despite economic and social status. Working specifically with those in Illinois Obama headed the campaign during his time in office there.

- The Joyce Foundation & The Woods Fund of Chicago

The Joyce Foundation and the Woods fund both work to create better opportunities and educational direction for Chicago public schools. Obama acted as a board member for each of these esteemed nonprofits.

-Overall Between Barack & Michelle Obama they contributed 22% of their income to charity in 2011, and 14% in 2010.

 Mitt Romney

- The Tyler Charitable Foundation

The Tyler Charitable Foundation according to the Boston Globe is a “Philanthropy, Voluntarism and Grantmaking Foundation.” Romney has reportedly donated about 9.5 million dollars to the foundation between 1999 and 2010.

-City Year

City year is a foundation that operates all around that nation to decrease the high school dropout rate, and provide a “pipeline” for students to gain leadership experience before entering the working force or a higher education. Romney worked on the national board from 1995 to 1999.

-Points of Light Foundation

The Power of lights foundations works to empower individuals by connecting them to organizations that share their philanthropy mission. Romney as the successor of his father George Romney, acts as the head of the organization.

-Over the past two years Ann & Mitt Romney have contributed 29% of their income to charity in 2011, and 14% of their income in 2010.
