What’s Your Story? Enter TechSoup’s Digital Storytelling Event
At FirstGiving, we know the power of a great story. Compelling stories inspire people to donate, understand the connection between the fundraiser and cause, and motivate readers to share and donate…over and over. Digital storytelling brings the viewer inside the cause and emphasizes the personal importance of the cause to the fundraiser. We also know that videos encourage donations: Ken Dooley, a Chicago Marathon 2010 runner, spliced together video highlights of his marathon fundraiser and raised an additional $800 when he posted his video after the marathon.
TechSoup and FirstGiving want to help you tell powerful stories
What is it?
The TechSoup Digital Storytelling Event opens January 13, 2011 and runs through January 31. The event is both a challenge and an opportunity for nonprofit organizations: Create a digital story (a 60 seconds or less video or 5-panel picture story) that conveys your organization’s mission and work in a compelling and creative way. Submit your digital story for the opportunity to win some fabulous prizes. This challenge is open to all international social benefit organizations and libraries. The challenge opens January 13th, and you can sign up here to be reminded.
Prizes, Prizes!
First, second and third place winners receive a host of prizes, include a Flip Ultra HD camera, online training and meeting software from Citrix, a one-year premium subscription to FirstGiving, an Optima Pico projector and Adobe Premier video production software. (Full list of prizes here)

Debra Askanase (@askdebra), Community Engagement Manager at FirstGiving, will be the guest on the first Twitter chat, which will focus on creating great digital stories. Please join us on TUESDAY, January 11 from 11:00 to 12 noon PST/2:00 to 3:00pm EST to discuss fundraising and storytelling.
Some discussion questions for the January 11 Twitter chat:
- What are the components of a good nonprofit video fundraising story?
- Compelling fundraising videos (what makes them compelling)
- What’s more important: the nonprofit’s story or the story of the client?
- Does technology matter?
- If you only have 5 pics to tell a story to raise money, what would the last one be?
- How do you find and decide the stories you want to tell?
- What stories raise the most money?
