World AIDS Day
Today marks the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day, an international awareness-raising campaign to fight and end the disease and prejudices surrounding it. There’s lots going on around the world; here are some highlights:
- From the official World AIDS Day campaign, info on an SMS campaign in India and some thoughts on the role of leadership in the fight against AIDS:
Leadership was selected as the theme for World AIDS Day to encourage leaders at all levels to stop AIDS. Leadership highlights the discrepancy between the commitments that have been made to halt the spread of AIDS, and actions taken to follow them through. The theme empowers everyone from individuals to organisations to governments to lead in the response to AIDS.

“Leadership is needed to ensure that vigilance and diligence in responding to the epidemic remain steadfast. Despite the global financial crisis, funding absolutely must remain predictable, sustainable, and substantial. We must ensure that the current unprecedented rollout of treatment reaches more people and is fully sustainable. Stepping back or slowing down on treatment is not an acceptable option on ethical and humanitarian grounds.”
–Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General
